If you don’t know about the Analog Sunset, we’re here to update you. If you do know something about it, we’re here to take away the hype that often surrounds it.
Many say we have big power players like Hollywood movie makers behind the content management issues that led to Analog Sunset.
In the turbulent world of electronic media rights, movie makers don’t want you copying their content – for free anyway.
The Basics
So, what does it mean to you? Here are the basics that matter about the phenomenon known as Analog Sunset:
1 - It is part of an industry agreement (Advanced Access Content System or AACS) that regulates the encryption and digital rights adopted by content owners and device manufacturers to protect material recorded on Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD from illegal copying and distribution.
2 - It refers to an agreement requiring that manufacturers stop selling devices capable of analog output which passes through the decrypted AACS by December 31st, 2013.
3 - It describes the “sunset” period that began in December of 2010 and which requires that video components manufactured between that date and the cutoff date in 2013 will have its analog outputs limited to standard definition.
The Problems
If you own Blu-ray devices you may be wondering what to do. If you have a sophisticated home theatre system you may be concerned that some components will cause a problem. You may be just plain old confused by the whole situation - and you would not be alone – wondering what you should do.
